Tostan, an NGO operating in the area of non-formal education Saturday disbursed D1.5 million to 40 Fula communities in the Upper River Region (URR). The disbursement is part of Tostan’s move towards empowering the communities that have being working with them in their three-year programme.

Speaking to this reporter shortly after the presentation that was held at the Governor’s Bantaba in Basse Mansajang, Bakary Tamba, Tostan’s national coordinator, explained that the disbursement is a two-year loan with no added profit for Tostan.

He said the communities can use the loan to open businesses. He recalled that Tostan did the same thing successfully among the Mandinka communities in the URR.  Tamba urged the beneficiaries to use the loan in the right way, stressing that there will be a supervisor who will monitor how loans are being used.

According to him, by the end of the loan term, the communities can be able to open their own businesses and be able to manage it on their own.

Presenting the cheques to the beneficiary communities, Governor Omar Khan thanked Tostan for the disbursement, while urging the beneficiaries to use the money in the right way.
